Use StoneTech Non-Acidic Honing Powder to remove scratches, acid etching, wear patterns on soft stones such as marble, limestone, travertine and terrazzo an comes in 5 abrasive grits for a variety of honed finishes on soft stones like marble and limestone - from deeply honed to satin. Prepares stone for polishing and shining, if desired.

Marble counter tops are a very popular design trend which are commonly installed in bathrooms and kitchens. A marble counter top can really accentuate the look and feel of a home. However, cleaning products and just usage will dull the surface and remove the sealer from your marble counter tops requiring maintenance over time. Acidic foods, salad dressings, vinegar, soft drinks, wine can etch the surface of a marble counter-top. Honing and polishing the marble counter top can bring it back to a factory finish. Of course, we strongly suggest granite instead of marble for kitchen countertops because granite is not acid sensitive and is harder to scratch and dull.

An uneven finish, dull spots, scratches or etch marks can diminish the elegant appearance of a soft stone floor. Limestone, marble, travertine and terrazzo floors can be polished using the appropriate StoneTech honing and polishing powders to restore the desired finish, whether matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish.

How to Hone Travertine, Terrazzo, Marble and Limestone Floors:

  1. Read label directions and cautions before using.
  2. NOTE: THIS PROCESS SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY EXPERIENCED, TRAINED TECHNICIANS.
  3. We STRONGLY suggest viewing the set of DVDs on how to hone and polish soft stones and come to the training class in Indianapolis before doing honing jobs.
  4. The lower the grit number, the more aggressive the hone, just like with sandpaper.
  5. Test in an inconspicuous area to determine the ease of application and desired results.
  6. Make sure surface is clean, dry and free of waxes and coatings.
  7. If surface is heavily soiled, pre-clean with StoneTech Klenz-All™ heavy-duty alkaline cleaner and degreaser, rinse and dry.
  8. Mask off baseboards, carpet, etc., with protective plastic and/or blue painter’s tape.
  9. If you are using a variety of abrasive grits, ensure that the surface is well rinsed and a new Gorilla® Hogs Hair Natural Hair Floor Pad is used for each changeover.
  10. Apply about 1/2 cup Honing Powder plus 1 cup clean water to stone surface.
  11. Refinish using a hand orbital sander or weighted heavy-duty Heavy-Duty Rotary Floor Machine at 130 to 140 lbs., 175 rpm, fitted with a pad driver and a Gorilla natural hair pad.
  12. Keep compound wet while buffing with plenty of water. Add Honing Powder as needed.
  13. Buff area until desired level of hone is achieved.
  14. Rinse well and use a wet vacuum or hot water extraction unit to remove all excess compound.
  15. Clean equipment with water.
  16. How to achieve a polished finish on marble and limestone:
    • Use successively higher grits of Honing Powder to close the face of the stone and follow with StoneTech Polishing Powder as applicable.
  17. Proper care of honed and polished stone such as marble:
    • Highly alkaline, acidic, ammoniated, and/or abrasive cleaners are not necessary for daily maintenance and may also degrade the sealer, adversely affecting stain resistance.
    • To maintain the stone’s natural beauty, seal the surface with Stone Sealer Lower-Cost Water-Based Advanced-Generation Penetrating Sealer, Impregnator Pro™ Solvent-Based Water-Based Advanced-Generation Penetrating Sealer, Sta-Clene® Solvent-Based Water-Based Advanced-Generation Penetrating Sealer or BulletProof™ Water-Based Water-Based Advanced-Generation Penetrating Sealer.
    • For maintenance cleaning, use StoneTech Revitalizer™ Stone Cleaner and Seal Refresher or StoneTech All Purpose Stone & Tile Cleaner.
