What is Stamped Concrete and How Is It Maintained?

Stamped concrete patios, walkways and driveways are much more beautiful than plain concrete, but require more maintenance & protection.

  • Stamped concrete, often called textured or imprinted concrete is fresh concrete that is patterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile and various other patterns. It is also typically colored.
  • Ordinary concrete can then be colored to mimic various finishes such as brick, slate, wood, stone or cobblestone.
  • The primary advantages are that the resulting surface is more beautiful than plain concrete and it is much cheaper than installing what it is imitating.
  • NOTE: Stamped concrete is not the same as concrete overlay, which is a thin color concrete-based product that goes over existing concrete. Overlays are thin and do not last as long as the concrete beneath them.

What is the Best Way to Clean Stamped Concrete?

  • Sweep and wash the surface occasionally to avoid dirt buildup using a push broom and/or leaf blower.
  • Cleaning the surface with a mop or pressure washer with mild detergent and should be done on a regular basis.
  • Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners on stamped concrete surfaces.
  • Avoid deicing salts and chemicals.
  • Do not use solvent or acid-based cleaning materials for general cleaning.
  • For routine cleaning, clean with StoneTech™ Revitalizer which is a mild detergent also containing a protector reinforcer or StoneTech™ All Purpose Stone & Tile Cleaner.
  • For heavy duty cleaning, clean with StoneTech Klenz-All™ Heavy Duty Stone, Tile & Grout Cleaner and Degreaser
  • To remove stubborn oil stains such as dripping oil from a car, use StoneTech Oil Stain Remover, which acts as a poultice to draw oil out of concrete.

How Often Should Stamped Concrete be Sealed?

  • Stamped concrete should be sealed at least every two years.
  • Freeze thaw damage can cause cracks or surface flaking and happens when water penetrates the concrete surface and then expands as it freezes. A sealer will keep water from sinking into your concrete.
  • A clear sealer which turns frosty white in color has delaminated from the concrete surface. This is most likely due to the coating’s inability to release water vapor trapped within the concrete quickly enough to prevent pressure buildup beneath the coating. StoneTech sealers are penetrating sealers and do not form a coating on the surface that keeps water from escaping.
  • For sealing interior stamped concrete surfaces, use StoneTech BulletProof™.
  • For sealing exterior stamped concrete surfaces, use StoneTech Exterior Heavy-Duty Stone & Masonry Sealer.
