Instructions and Directions for PREPARING for Application of Wood-Fresh Preservation Finish with the Hardwood Floor Cleaner:
Prequalify:
-
Determine if there is finish on the wood by placing drops of water in several places to see if it penetrates into the wood as evidenced by darkening.
-
If there is no finish present (bare wood), do not use the water-based wood floor preservation system - use the Wood-Solv system instead.
- Test the floor whether it is coated with aluminum oxide. In an inconspicuous area, lightly abrade the floor with sandpaper.
- If the floor is unaffected, it is coated with aluminum oxide - use the Wood-Solv system instead.
- Be aware that many such floors carry a warranty that is voided if a finish is applied to it.
- Inspect the floor for damage to the wood and the existing finish.
- Also check for wax, oil and soap coatings such as Orange Glo, Murphey® Oil Soap, Holloway House®, Mop & Glo®, etc.
- Apply a small amount of alcohol on a towel and apply to an inconspicuous area that the customer has been “cleaning”. If the finish comes off or turns cloudy, the “gunk” must be removed before proceeding. No water-based finish, including Wood Preservation Finish, will adhere to waxes or oils.
- The preinspection and prequalification step is essential for the success of each job. The system emphasizes the importance of preserving the original finish, so hopefully the customer will never have to go through the messy process of sanding and recoating their hardwood. This system does not make damaged or heavily scratched floors look like new. Floors in that condition should be restored using the Wood-Solv process or may need to be sanded or screened and refinished.
Prepare the floor:
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Read label directions and cautions before using.
- Always test on a hidden or inconspicuous area first.
- Move out any furniture or other objects that may be in the way.
- If doing this job in an industrial or commercial setting, set out your Caution Signs and Caution Pads.
- Dust mop or vacuum (without the beater bar) the floor thoroughly.
- Mask off floor vents, baseboards and transitions from wood to other types of floors and with masking tape.
- Mix 4 parts water to 1 part Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner in a sprayer.
- Spray a light mist application to a small section of the floor (about 10x10). Do not allow the cleaner to dry before cleaning. With a low speed floor machine (175 rpm), scrub the floor with a maroon floor pad. Because this is a inch pad, it is best to place a white floor pad between the maroon pad and the driver block to offer cushioning and prevent any damage to the floor as shown here.
- Do not allow the cleaner to dry before cleaning.
- Wipe up residue as you go the Wood-Solv mop cover or the Microfiber Wood Finish Applicator Mop.
- Be careful not to over-apply Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner as excess water on the floor can cause damage.
- The scrubbing action will loosen and remove soil build-up as well as the surface of the old finish, leaving a surface that has a slightly rough feel. This new surface will readily accept and bond to the Hardwood Preservation Finish. NOTE: Aluminum oxide coated floors will not be abraded; therefore, the finish will not adhere!
- Mop the floor with a Wood-Solv mop cover or a Microfiber Wood Finish Applicator Mop to absorb the Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner and the released soil. Repeat this mopping procedure a second time.
- Spray the floor with a light coat of Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner and buff the floor with your floor machine and a cotton bonnet (absorbent pad).
- While wearing shoe booties, go over the floor a final time with a damp clean terry cloth cover attached to the applicator. This will remove any dust or lint before applying finish.
- In corners and along the edges of the floor, you will need to accomplish the above procedures by hand. You may remove the center portion of the maroon pad or use a Doodle Bug scrubbing pad for this handwork.
- You are now ready to apply Hardwood Preservation Finish as soon as the floor is dry. Depending on conditions, this could take up to 1 hour.
Cleaning Wood Floors Only - No Finish Applied:
Hardwood floors are generally dirty - much dirtier than most customers realize. This gives the professional an option for cleaning only. Using Wood Fresh Preservation Cleaner with a quality machine will make a big difference in the look of a soiled floor. If cleaning is performed without the preservation finished being applied, avoid shoe traffic for two hours following the cleaning.
For best results, apply the cleaner to your floor with a sprayer or squirt bottle, then quickly wipe away the solution with a dry mop or cloth until it is close to dry. It is also important to clean spills immediately, and spot clean when needed to extend the life of your floors.
NOTE: Soaked mops should never be used on hardwood floors. This is known to cause extensive damage. Hardwood flooring products containing ammonia or oil soaps should also be avoided. These ingredients ruin the urethane finish and causes hardwood to warp.

Usage & Tips
Wood-Fresh Water-Based Wood Floor Preservation System
from Bane-Clene® Corp.
For several years, Bane-Clene has carried two wood floor care system: Wood-Solv™ and LamanatorPlus™. We have replaced the LamanatorPlus line with the WOOD FLOOR PRESERVATION SYSTEM. How do these systems differ and where is each used?
- The key difference between the Wood-Fresh Wood Floor Preservation system and the Wood-Solv restoration system lies in the two words “preservation” and “restoration”.
- The Wood Floor Preservation system is designed to preserve a hardwood floor that is already in fairly good condition, but the customer wants to keep it that way. It is designed for floors simply needing to be cleaned and brightened up with light coats of finish.
- The Wood-Fresh Wood Floor Preservation finish serves as the wear coat and protects the original finish of the floor.
- The Wood-Fresh Wood Floor Preservation finish, an acrylic/urethane system, is extremely easy to use, applies easily and smoothly with excellent leveling with a choice of gloss and satin and is much more “goof proof” than the Wood-Solv system.
- Because the Wood Floor Preservation system is so easy to use, we encourage professionals who’ve never worked with finishes before to start with this system before advancing to the Wood-Solv system.
- The Wood-Solv System is designed primarily to restore a hardwood floor or laminate floor that requires repairs, is badly worn with sometimes bare wood spots or is used on a floor with very heavy use such as in some commercial applications.
- The Wood-Solv system incorporating a CATALYZED urethane very high solids finish is harder and more durable and can even be applied to bare wood and laminate. HOWEVER, it also is “trickier” to apply and get a smooth even coat with good adhesion. Additionally, once the finish is catalyzed in the can, it has a limited life span in the can.
- For refinishing and restoring laminate floors, floors with some exposed bare wood or severely damaged floors, Wood-Solv is the preferred system to use.
- While the Wood Floor Preservation System is NOT designed for laminate floors or for hardwood floors with an aluminum oxide coating nor on bare wood, Wood-Solv is perfect for that application.
- How does the Wood Floor Preservation system compare to the LamanatorPlus system we no longer carry - and why do we no longer carry it?
Cleaning and polishing the hardwood or laminate floor WITHOUT applying finish using the Wood Floor Preservation System:
Quite often, the customer simply wants her floor cleaned, scuff marks removed and shined up. In that case follow this procedure:
- Dust mop or vacuum (without the beater bar) the floor thoroughly.
- Mix a solution of 1 part Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner to 4 parts water (32 oz./gal.) in a sprayer.
- Spray a light coat of the solution on the floor.
-
DO NOT OVERWET the wood floor, especially if there are a lot of unsealed gaps between the boards.
- Agitate the solution on the floor with the 8 inch Flock Foam Microfiber Corner Edger or the Microfiber Wood Finish Applicator Mop to loosen the dirt. Agitation can also be accomplished with a cotton or bonnet and a 175 RPM floor machine.

- Follow with a clear water rinse with a lint-free mop or a microfiber mop. Do not over wet!
- Once the floor is dry, buff the floor with a white floor pad or a cotton bonnet to bring back the shine of the finish.

- If cleaning is performed without the preservation finish being applied, avoid shoe traffic for two hours following the cleaning.
Laminate Flooring:
- The Wood Preservation Finishes are NOT designed for laminate floors or for hardwood floors with an aluminum oxide coating. For laminate floor REFINISHING, Wood-Solv™ is the preferred system to use.
- However, laminate floor owners sometimes find that their laminate floors lose their shine and get soiled. Often this is because of the build-up from Orange Glo® etc. being used on their floors, leading to footprints, soiling, dulling, stickiness, etc. Once the floor is professionally cleaned with Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner, the original finish can shine through again.
- Professional cleaning utilizing the same procedures as defined above effectively improves the appearance of laminate flooring. The cleaning procedures should NOT employ the use of a maroon floor pad. The floor can be effectively cleaned utilizing the Wood Fresh Hardwood Cleaner and a Cotton Bonnet.
- Note that the warranty requirements of most laminate floor manufactures prohibit the use of a recoating finish.
- Note that the warranty requirements of most laminate floor manufacturers prohibit the use of a recoating finish.
-
HOWEVER, the Pergo® warranty, among others, has this interesting warning: “Gloss or sheen reduction is not considered to be surface wear and is not covered by the above warranties.”

The Hardwood Preservation Finishes:
- The Gloss and Satin Hardwood Preservation Finishes are both high quality acrylic/urethane finishes. The customer should be aware that the gloss finish will show slightly more imperfections such as scuffs and microscratches as it wears. Most finishes from the factory and those applied to new raw wood will have a satin finish. In any case the customer will decide. It’s helpful to have some pieces of wood flooring you’ve prepared to show the customer the difference.
- Have some pieces of wood flooring you've prepared to show the customer the difference.
-
Hardwood Preservation Finish is designed to be used as a preservation finish over an existing urethane finish over a hardwood floor. It is a blend of urethane and acrylic so that it can be easily applied over a urethane finish after a thorough cleaning and a properly prepared base finish. This preservation finish serves as the wear coat and protects the original finish of the floor.
- Let the customer choose Gloss or Satin finish. Encourage her to choose the Satin finish.
- If applying the satin finish, 30 minutes prior to applying the finish, the container should be gently rocked to mix the ingredients.
- Apply finish with the 8 inch Flock Foam Microfiber Corner Edger or the Microfiber Wood Finish Applicator Mop.
-
Corners and edges: Using the Corner Edger Applicator, apply Wood Finish to edges and corners by hand.
- Apply the finish about an hour after the abrasion cleaning system is completed. The abrasion cleaning system leaves the hardwood floor damp making necessary a dry time of about an hour.
- Avoid creating bubbles when applying the finish.
- Start in the furthest area from your exit. Apply a small amount of finish in a 4 or 5 foot area, spreading it uniformly as you work your way back toward the exit door.
- To apply, use the Corner Edger Applicator or the Microfiber Wood Finish Applicator Mop. Once the floor has dried naturally for approximately 45 minutes, a second coat of finish is then applied and also allowed to dry naturally. DO NOT force dry the finish.
- The end result is a clean, refinished and rejuvenated wood floor and a happy customer.
Traffic: Allow one hour dry time before allowing stocking feet onto the finish. Allow 24 hours before shoe traffic and replacing furniture. Allow 48 hours before replacing rugs. Remember that it is a great time to take oriental rugs off site to clean them, returning them within a week. You may want to offer your customer shoe covers to wear over their shoes for the next couple of days.
Pricing: Prices generally range from $0.75 to $1.50 depending on the size of the job. This price excludes jobs that require a lot of repairs or preparation. Depending on the extra work, this could raise the charge to the $1.50 to $3.00 or more per foot range.
Cabinets, furniture and trim: Due to the wide variance in these items, it is difficult to set a per sq. ft. rate. These are done by hand and typically require more labor and time.
Preservation Gloss Finish Coverage: Approximately 1,000 sq. feet per gallon.
Protect from Freezing! This finish IS NOT FREEZE-THAW STABLE!
