If you've lost water pressure, the rubber stator inside your solution pump has most likely worn, blown, or been damaged from running the machine dry. This guide covers stator, seal, bearing, and flex-joint repair for the detergent solution pump (Cat. #20479) used in Bane-Clene carpet cleaning equipment.
Replace the Stator (#20510) in Pump #20480
Always replace the Stator Support Ring (#20520) when you replace the stator.
- You don't need to remove the hose fittings from the pump.
- Remove the 8 screws (#20530) on the back of the suction housing (#20500) on the intake side, using a long, slender screwdriver.
- Slide the suction housing back from the main pump body (#20490) and remove the stator (#20510) from the rotor (#20590) shaft with a counter-clockwise motion.
- Insert the support ring (#20520) into the new stator (see the diagram in your pump manual).
- Thread the stator onto the rotor shaft clockwise until it seats into the receiving recess of the main pump body.
- The stator edge forms its own gasket, so no separate gasket is needed.
- Slide the suction housing over the stator and replace the 8 screws.
- Tighten the screws in an alternating pattern, like lug nuts on a car wheel, bringing the housing into contact with the pump body as evenly as possible. Excess pressure on one side will cause the housing to bind and crack the casting.
Replace the Pump Seal or Bearings
- Remove the pump from the machine.
- Remove the screws holding the suction housing (#20500) to the pump body (#20490).
- Remove the suction housing and stator (#20510 / #20480).
- Remove the rotor (#20590) from the flexible joint (#20580) by turning counter-clockwise (right-hand thread).
- Remove the flexible joint from the shaft (#20550) using a 3/16" Allen wrench in the end of the joint, turning counter-clockwise.
- Carefully slide the mechanical seal (#20570) off the shaft.
- Carefully pry the seal seat out of the pump body.
- Replace the complete seal assembly. Seal components are matched parts and are not interchangeable.
- Remove the snap ring (#20560), then remove the bearing (#20540) and shaft assembly from the pump body.
- To remove the assembly, lightly tap the shaft at the threaded end using a block of wood to protect the threads.
- Press the bearings off the shaft.
When replacing bearings: always press on the inner race when assembling to the shaft, and on the outer race when pressing bearings into the housings.
Assemble the Water Pump
- Press the bearings onto the shaft.
- Press the shaft assembly into the pump body and secure it with the snap ring.
- Install the mechanical seal:
- Clean and lubricate the lapped sealing faces using dishwashing soap.
- Lubricate the outer surface of the seal seat and push the assembly into the base in the pump body, seating it firmly and squarely.
- After cleaning and lubricating the shaft, slide the seal body along the shaft until it meets the seal seat.
- Install the spring and spring retainer on the shaft.
- Thread the flexible joint into the shaft clockwise (right-hand thread).
- Thread the rotor onto the flexible joint clockwise (right-hand thread).
- Insert the rounded end of the stator ring (#20520) into the end of the stator before installing it on the rotor.
- Slide the stator onto the rotor.
- Secure the stator and suction housing to the pump body with the suction port vertical, using the screws.
Repair a Broken Flex Joint (#20580)
- Separate the two halves of the solution pump housing.
- Leave the base of the pump in the base unit with the drive belt attached.
- Slip a 15 mm six-point socket snugly over the broken half of the flex joint attached to the pump shaft.
- Using an impact wrench, spin the broken part out of the pump shaft threads (counter-clockwise).
- Remove the stator and auger from the other half of the housing.
- Clamp the auger in a padded vise and use the 15 mm socket and impact wrench to remove the other broken half from the auger (counter-clockwise).
No impact wrench? In the field, use a socket extension or two and strike the ratchet handle sharply with a hammer to back the broken part out of the pump shaft. Remove the other half from the auger the same way, but leave the auger in the stator while you strike the handle.
Dirty hands afterward? Booster works as well as any hand cleaner you'll find at an auto parts store. Use it straight.
