Stair Carpeting
Stair Carpeting - What to Buy, How to Clean
Stairs make a first impression.
When your guests enter your multi-story home, one of the first things they may see are your stairs and their eyes follow them right up to the top floor! How do they look? Defined traffic pattern? Matted? Discolored? Have they “uglied” out? Don’t let carpet appearance distract from the beauty of your home.
What type of carpet and pad to buy for stairs.
Stairs are one of the highest-traffic areas of any home, requiring the most durable and long wearing carpet available. We recommend high-twist, cut-pile, high-density pile, low pile (¾-inch or less), stain-resistant nylon carpet. Choose more durable carpet for stairs graded “heavy domestic” or “extra heavy domestic”. Pick a carpet color that hides heavy traffic patterns, dirt and stains. Additionally, the higher grade your cushion (padding) under the carpet, the longer your stair carpeting will keep its like-new look. Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) suggests selecting padding with no more than 3/8 inch thickness and with 8 pounds density for the low-profile carpet used on stairs.
What type of carpet NOT to buy for stairs.
The carpet should NOT be loop-pile such as Berber because it is possible that it might snag shoe heels causing tripping and potential falls. It should NOT be polyester or olefin fibers because they do not resist heavy traffic and crushing. Do NOT pick light colors such as creams and ivories that will “ugly out” more quickly.
Warranties on stair carpeting.
In the fine print of most carpet warranties, you may discover that the carpet that has been installed on your stairs is NOT covered under warranty because it is considered “abnormal wear and tear”. When buying new carpet for your stairs, be sure to review the warranty!
Cleaning stair carpeting between professional cleanings.
If the carpet on your stairs needs cleaning, what method should you use? Of first importance is frequent vacuuming of stair carpeting which will facilitate in the removal of abrasive and topical soils. Also “grooming” with a carpet “rake” will help keep the pile from matting.
Do-It-Yourself cleaning stair carpeting.
Beyond vacuuming, there are many “methods” for cleaning your stairs. Some might “scrub” the carpet with a brush and shampoo, which would not only damage the fibers but lead to resoiling because of shampoo residue left in the carpeting. Still others might use a little home extractor that is used sometimes for spot and spill removal. However, those will hardly improve the appearance of carpet, since they do not deep clean and have the possibility of leaving the carpeting too wet and possibly causing delamination of the backing of the carpet. Also, leaving the carpet too wet may cause mold and mildew to fester and raise potential health issues.
