Slime Removal from Carpets and Rugs DIY

Do-It-Yourself Steps to Remove Slime from Carpet

Slime is made from a chemical reaction between a polymer (glue) and a slime activator (borax or eye drops). The two main ingredients in slime are polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is the polymer, and borax, which dissolves to form borate ions. When these two chemicals are combined, they react to form a cross-linked polymer, creating a thick, sticky “non-Newtonian fluid,” which means that it is neither a liquid nor a solid.

The most commonly used glue is Elmer’s Glue

How to get wet slime out of carpet:

  1. Scrape as much of the slime out of the carpet as possible.
  2. Mix 2/3 cup white vinegar with 1/3 water and put it into a spray bottle.
  3. Spray the white vinegar mixture or undiluted Brown Out on the remaining slime. Allow it to soak in. You should immediately start to see the slime dissolve.
  4. Use a mild scrub brush to work the mixture into the carpet. The slime will start to soften and break loose.
  5. Blot the slime spot with a white cloth to remove some of the spray mixture and then repeat with more spray and blotting until the slime is gone.
  6. Thoroughly wet extract the area.
  7. If the carpet is stained from a slime coloring, use peroxide to remove the color stain from the carpet. CAUTION: Carpet or rug color may be removed or lightened!

How to get dried slime out of carpet:

  1. Apply ice on top of the dried slime stain spot.
  2. Let the ice sit for 10 minutes or until the slime is frozen.
  3. Once the slime is frozen, pick, break or gently scrape the slime out of the carpet.
  4. To remove the remaining slime, follow the how-to remove wet slime steps above.
