Wine on Carpet (DIY)
Removing Red Wine from Carpet or Rug Yourself:
- Before attempting any method on the actual red wine stain on the carpet, test it in an area that’s out of sight, like under a couch, first.
- The key to cleaning up a red wine stain from your carpet is to ACT FAST! The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove the stain.
- If you can’t get to it immediately, blot up as much as possible quickly and sprinkle salt on the spill so you can get to the stain later.
- Blot (don’t rub )with a white towel. Rubbing a stain on carpet will move the stain further into the fibers.
- Some stains may require multiple treatments, so it’s important not to let them dry completely in between treatments.
- If a heavy spill, apply a one-half inch layer of WHITE (no printing) paper towels or a folded white dry towel to the affected area and weight down with a flat heavy object,
- Remove the next day.
- If unsuccessful, Pour club soda over the entire stain.
- Pour the solution directly onto the affected area.
- Place a pan of hot water on the stain overnight.
- NOTE: While rare, this solution itself can bleach out the carpet dye.
- Blot with lukewarm water with a white towel.
- Blot dry with a dry WHITE absorbent towel.
- If still unsuccessful, mix one part hand dishwashing liquid and three parts hydrogen peroxide and apply to the stain with a sponge or cloth. Let it sit 20 minutes to an hour. Blot clean and repeat if necessary.
