Food Coloring Carpet Stain (DIY)
Follow these steps to remove food dye stains such as Kool-Aid® and fruit punch on your nylon carpet:
Kool-Aid is one of the most difficult stains to remove from carpet because it contains a highly reactive dye. Even professional carpet cleaners sometimes have trouble removing them if they are old using stain removers especially designed for removing food coloring stains on carpet. The sooner you absorb or dilute the Kool-Aid trapped in the carpet, the greater the chance you can successfully remove stain.
- If still wet, blot up as much liquid as possible right away.
- Blot with plenty of dry towels or paper towels.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap into 2 cups of warm water.
- Blot the spot repeatedly at first with this solution, working from the outside of the spill toward the center.
- Blot with a solution of 1 teaspoon maximum of liquid HAND dish washing detergent per cup of lukewarm water.
- Continue blotting until there is no more Kool-Aid color on either the carpet or the towel.
- Blot with lukewarm water with a white towel.
- Blot dry with a dry WHITE absorbent towel.
- If any is left, blot with white vinegar.
- If a heavy spill, apply a one-half inch layer of WHITE (no printing) paper towels to the affected area and weight down with a flat heavy object like a brick and remove the next day.
