Small bleached or discolored spots can often be restored by replacing the damaged dye in the carpet. However, this process requires dye mixing and a lot of practice to achieve an acceptable result. Instead, you can choose to perform a very simple and easy recoloring of the spot using Color Modifier Cosmetics (CMC). These dyes are wax based, can be easily applied and require no mixing. They are easy to adjust, lighten, darken or remove.

Step-by-Step procedure for eliminating bleach spots on carpet:

  1. WARNING: Chlorine bleach dissolves wool and damages cotton.
  2. Absorb and flush with water.
  3. Repeat this process at least 3 times to remove as much contamination as possible.
  4. If the spill was extremely heavy, use the Water Claw® Sub-Surface Spot Lifter to more thoroughly flush out the bleach spill. Even then, it may be necessary to remove the contaminated padding to avoid chlorine bleaching fumes and liquid from wicking to the surface and ruining your repair.
  5. As with all cleaning chemicals, pre-test your procedure in an inconspicuous area prior to using.
  6. Thoroughly soak the bleached area with ChlorX Bleach Neutralizer to neutralize the bleach. ChlorX is an anti-chlor reducing bleach.
  7. Allow 3 minutes dwell time prior to your color restoration.
  8. Rinse out the anti-chlor.
  9. Very important: Remove as much moisture as possible before you begin your color restoration.
  10. If you are correcting a spot on gray carpet, you will be using the Gray/Black CMC.
  11. If you are correcting a spot on a tan or brown carpet, you will be using the Tan/Brown CMC.
  12. Apply a conservative amount of Pro-Solve NE (soon to be renamed “CMC Application Fluid”) to the bleached fibers and rub the fibers lightly with the CMC to transfer color onto the fibers.
  13. Work the color into the fibers with a Carpet Shark Spotting Tool. NOTE: Pro-Solve NE is not the same product as Pro-Solve Liquid!
  14. If excess color is applied, dampen a terry towel with Pro-Solve NE and wipe away the excess color.
  15. Once dried, Pro’s Choice CMCs are considered semi-permanent. However, an aggressive solvent will remove them.
  16. If the color is not a perfect match, adjust the color as follows:
    1. If the color is too orange, add a small amount of blue.
    2. If the color is too red or pink, add green.
    3. If the color is too yellow, add a miniscule amount of blue and an equal amount of red.
    4. If the color is too green, add a small amount of red.
    5. If the color is too gray, add a small amount of yellow.
  17. If severe, the carpet may have to be replaced or the stained part of the carpet replaced:
    1. Using a Cookie Cutter Professional Carpet Repair Kit, cut out the bleached spot.
    2. Locate a spare scrap of carpet or use the carpet from the back of a closet and cut out a replacement section with the cookie cutter.
    3. Making sure you have the carpet going in the same nap direction, use an adhesive disc and apply the new portion of carpet to the spot. If you took a piece of carpet from the back of a closet, use the bleached section you removed to fill the empty spot in the closet. If you used a scrap piece of carpet, simply toss the bleached section in the trash.
    4. WITHOUT BLADES on the carpet cutter, carefully define a circular path to cut (around the stain or imperfection).
    5. Add blades and center pivot screw to cutter, per included directions. Put the cutting blades in the down position. All the cutting edges must face in the same direction.
    6. Make sure pivot screw and blade screws are tightened firmly. Note that the picture shows blades positioned for right hand use.
    7. The center pivot screw screw should be positioned so that point extends about 1/8 inch beyond the tips of the blades.
    8. Carefully rotate cutter unit, and cut replacement from carpet remnant.
    9. Place a piece of masking tape over the damaged area.
    10. Position the tool so that the tip of the center pivot screw is over the center of the damaged area.
    11. Press tool down firmly. With a rotating motion, cut entirely through the carpet, but not the pad.
    12. Reproduce the cutting procedure like with the remnant, but on the damaged area.
    13. Carefully remove damaged carpet cut piece.
    14. Peel away backing from included Insta-Hold adhesive pad. Moisten the adhesive and your fingers (water prevents premature adhesion).
    15. Using the pre-cut slit on discs, slip into circular hole made in your carpet (adhesive side up).
    16. Insert Insta-Hold disc through the cutout using the pre-cut slit. Turn counter-clockwise when rotating disc into position.
    17. Center Insta-Hold disc so it lies flat and the end of the pre-cut slit is positioned at the center of the patch area.
    18. Seal carpet edge to prevent delamination of carpet backing.
    19. Place your previously cut repair piece (from the remnant) into sealer hole.
    20. Rotate it to match existing carpet pile direction.
    21. Apply pressure to assure adhesion.
    22. Trim any loose tufts.
    23. Step heavily on repaired area to assure good adhesion.
    24. If replacement patch came from a hidden section of carpet, install the damaged area cut-out in that location.
