How to Remove Residue from Temporary Carpet Protection, Carpet Covers, Carpet Film, Carpet Protection Tape, Carpet Runners, Plastic Runners Off of Carpet

Temporary protection plastic carpet film, sometimes called carpet cover, features a pressure sensitive water-based self-adhesive system for new build, repair, conversion and refit to replace more traditional materials such as drop cloths, tarps, Visqueen® and Herculite®.

Most of the manufacturers state the film is to be down for a very limited time with limited traffic.

Unfortunately, the adhesive frequently transfers to the carpet and doesn’t fully come off in normal cleaning, in spite of claims by the manufacturers. Additionally, discoloration and even dye loss can occur on the carpet under the plastic runner, especially if left down too long. It is particularly difficult to remove this residue from steps.

  1. Apply Pro-Solve Liquid Solvent Spotter by Pro’s Choice
  2. Scrub and extract.
  3. A second application and cleaning may be required later.

Fortunately, there is now a non-adhesive type to replace the problematic old type for use on loop pile and loop-and-cut pile carpet:

Velcro® Brand Temporary Carpet Protection is a breathable film backing that secures to loop carpeting with hook technology. It does not use adhesives like the self-adhesive products banned by carpet manufacturers.
