What is the latest news on Noroviruses?
After a long period of decline in Norovirus infections, in 2023, the incidents of infection have rapidly increased! Cases of norovirus are spreading across the United States and are higher than usual at this point in this season, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.
More than 15% of weekly tests for norovirus are coming back positive, the highest seen since mid-March 2022. Additionally, 225 outbreaks have been recorded between Aug. 1, 2022 and Jan. 2, 2023, compared to 172 at this point last year, CDC data shows.
What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea and is the leading cause of food-borne illness. Norovirus is sometimes called the stomach flu, stomach bug and also the “winter vomiting bug.” However, Norovirus illness is not related to the flu which is caused by influenza virus.
Where can Norovirus contamination come from?
A person can become infected by having direct contact with someone who is infected and sharing food or utensils with them; touching surfaces or objects contaminated with norovirus and then touching your face or mouth; or consuming contaminated foods or liquids.
What are the Symptoms of Illness from Norovirus?
Diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting typically begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Norovirus symptoms usually last one to three days, and most people recover completely without treatment.
How to Prevent Spreading of Norovirus?
According to a widely cited study by University of Arizona researcher Dr. Charles Gerber, office equipment should be regularly disinfected to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses responsible for causing diseases.
Microbiologic sampling of desks found 10 million microbes, and an average office contains 20,961 microbes per square inch. One of the worst offenders are telephones, which harbor up to 25,127 microbes per square inch. Also, computer mice and keyboards can support 1,676 and 3,295 microbes per square inch respectively. Gerba found that cleaning desks with disinfecting wipes reduced bacteria levels by 99%.
