“Lock ‘em in!” That’s the mantra of marketing people today. Don’t you love buying something at an appliance store and then you have to do something in order to get the discount or free delivery you were promised? You have to answer marketing questions and mail in a certificate in order to get that rebate or to validate a warranty.

“Make ‘em work!” Airlines, hotels, car rentals and vendors of all kinds want you to join a club in order to get preferred treatment. Platinum, gold, silver and bronze members are treated differently. The level of membership determines the price you’ll pay and how you’re treated. This is a classic case of “class conspiracy".
