According to a widely cited study by University of Arizona researcher Dr. Charles Gerba, office equipment should be regularly disinfected to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses responsible for causing diseases.

Microbiologic sampling of desks found 10 million microbes, and an average office contains 20,961 microbes per square inch. One of the worst offencers are telephones, which harbor up to 25,127 microbes per square inch. Also, computer mice and keyboards can support 1,676 and 3,295 microbes per square inch respecively. Gerba found that cleaning desks with disinfecting wipes reduced bacteria levels by 99%.
