School House

There is considerable concern in the carpet industry about the amount of carpet being removed from schools around the country. A recent review of Bane-Clene's experience with school districts revealed some very positive results. For example, a representative of the Vigo County School Corporation was interviewed and following is a brief history of the account with current comments:

In the fall of 1995, Glen Campbell, a board member of the Vigo County School Corporation of Indiana, and his wife stayed at a motel on a visit to Indianapolis. An operator using Bane-Clene equipment happened to be cleaning at the motel, and Mr. Campbell watched him work and said he was very impressed. He was so impressed, in fact, that he and his wife stayed over in Indianapolis and came to Bane-Clene for a demonstration of the cleaning method.

On Mr. Campbell's recommendation, the Vigo County School Corporation in Terre Haute, Indiana, purchased a Bane-Clene Mega-Port® on March 12, 1996, to begin a trial cleaning program which proved to be completely successful. The school district then purchased a Bane-Clene Ultra-Port Deluxe® on June 4, 1996 and two additional Ultra-Ports on May 5, 1997.

Cleaning staff members were trained at Bane-Clene Institute. They clean with PCA™ Formula 5 and Booster™™ as a primary cleaning agent. The dilution ratio for this combination is 256 parts of water to one part of chemical. Preface® is used as a pre-spray, when necessary, in difficult traffic lanes. Preface has a dilution ratio of ten parts of water to one part of chemical. This is an economical and efficient cleaning combination which leaves virtually no residue and complements the most stringent budgetary limitations.

Mr. David Danner, Director of Facility Management Services for Vigo County School Corporation, said, "School schedules dictate that most carpet cleaning is done during summer months, holidays and other breaks during the school year and whenever necessary while classes are in session. We are very satisfied with the performance of the Bane-Clene system and definitely are not considering removing any carpet in any of our schools."

Mr. Danner went on to say, "I do not believe there is cause for health concern as long as the carpet is cleaned properly. A key factor is ensuring that the carpet will dry in an acceptable and reasonable period of time."

Charles Young School

The Charles Young Elementary School in Washington, D. C., was completely renovated in 1999. The educational facility is located in a poverty-stricken area of the nation's capitol and much of the material and labor were donated by members of the CRI including Bane-Clene.

The project included installation of carpet and a full year's maintenance. Dr. Michael Berry has done a complete study entitled, " Healthy School Environment and Enhanced Educational Performance " which is available on CRI's web site: The U. S. EPA sponsored “Tools for Schools, ” a symposium that included a presentation about “ IAQ and School Performance. ” Attendees represented school administrators, facilities planners, educators, nurses, indoor air quality experts and public health officials from 49 states.

The Charles Young project was used as an example and revealed some startling and dramatic statistics about student performance:

1 Yr. BEFORE renovation
Attendance 89%
Math scores 51%
Reading scores 59%

2 Yrs. AFTER renovation
Attendance 93%
Math scores 76%
Reading scores 75%
